Wordle multiplayer is any version of the five-letter word-guessing game designed for more than one player at once. Instead of solving alone, you race friends to crack the same word, solve one shared board together, or climb a competitive ranking ladder — all in real time from your browser.
What Is Wordle Multiplayer?
Standard Wordle is a solo experience: one word, six guesses, one player. Multiplayer Wordle keeps the exact same guessing mechanic — green for the right letter in the right spot, yellow for the right letter in the wrong spot, grey for misses — but adds live opponents or teammates.
There is no official multiplayer mode from the New York Times (which owns the original Wordle). Every multiplayer Wordle available today is a community-built, fan-made project. That sounds risky, but many are open-source, free to play in a browser, and work surprisingly well: a host creates a room, shares a short code or link, and friends join in seconds with no sign-up required .
The Main Multiplayer Wordle Modes
Different projects implement multiplayer differently. These are the modes you will actually find in the wild:
- Versus / Race. Every player gets their own board with the same secret word. First to solve wins. You can usually watch your opponents' tile colours stream in live (letters hidden), which builds real tension as someone else's row goes fully green .
- Co-op. The whole room shares one board. Anyone can type into the shared row and submit guesses together. Six guesses to crack one word as a team .
- Turn-by-turn. Players alternate guesses against the same word — a slower, more strategic duel .
- Sudden Death. First player to solve takes the round instantly .
- Blitz / timed. Most words solved inside a time limit (for example, five minutes) .
- Battle Royale. Several players compete in a large room until one remains .
- Ranked / MMR. Some projects add Elo-style rating systems and in-game currency betting, so matches have stakes and you climb a leaderboard .
- Daily Challenge. Everyone in the community plays the same word each day and scores are compared .
Popular Multiplayer Wordle Games
Here are the best-known fan-made options, all free and browser-based:
Wordle Battle. A real-time multiplayer Wordle built for quick matches with friends. Two modes: turn-by-turn (players alternate guesses) and sudden death (first to solve wins). When everyone runs out of guesses, two extra rows are added dynamically so the game stays fair. No accounts — you pick a name, the host shares a 4-character code or invite link, and the match runs over WebSocket in real time .
Worduel. A competitive multiplayer Wordle where two players race to guess the same five-letter word. It offers best-of-3 matches (first to win two rounds) and a Blitz mode (most words solved in five minutes). Players can bet in-game currency with the winner taking the pot, and an Elo-based MMR ranking system tracks your skill over time .
Multiplayer Wordle (anish-sharan). A real-time project with a Next.js frontend and FastAPI backend that gives the host a choice of two modes: Co-op, where the whole room shares one board and anyone can submit guesses, or Versus, where everyone races the same word on their own board while opponents' tile colours stream in live. After each round the answer is revealed along with its dictionary definition .
WordlePlus. A multiplayer Wordle with a wide menu of modes: Duel (1v1), Battle Royale, Battle AI (against the computer), Daily Challenge, and a Shared mode. Real-time play via Socket.IO.
Wordle Competition Edition. A feature-rich take with solo and competition modes. In competition mode you create a room, share a six-character code, and compete on a live leaderboard — first to 200 points wins. It also has difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard) with separate word lists and a shared daily word per difficulty.
Because these are community projects, check the project's page or README for the current live link before relying on one — open-source games sometimes move hosting.
How to Play Wordle With Friends: Step by Step
The exact flow varies by project, but the typical setup looks like this:
- Pick a platform. Choose one of the multiplayer Wordle projects above (or another you find) and open it in your browser — no downloads needed.
- Create a room. One player hosts and gets a short room code (usually 4–6 characters) or an invite link.
- Share the code. Send the code or link to your friends over WhatsApp, Discord, or wherever your group chats.
- Friends join. They enter the code, pick a display name, and land in the lobby. Most games need no account or sign-up.
- Choose a mode. The host picks Versus, Co-op, Sudden Death, Blitz, or whatever the game offers.
- Play. Everyone guesses simultaneously (versus) or takes turns (turn-by-turn). Tile colours update live so you can feel the race.
- Rematch. Most games let the loser demand an instant rematch — which is where rivalries are born.

7 Tips to Win at Competitive Wordle
- Open with a vowel-heavy starter. Words like ADIEU, AUDIO, or RAISE reveal the most information on guess one, which matters more when every second counts.
- Burn a word instead of guessing blind. If you have two greens and no ideas, play a word packed with unused consonants (THUMP, CLINK) to eliminate letters rather than waste a guess on a random answer.
- Watch the tile feed. In versus modes where opponents' colours stream in live, their greens tell you which letter positions are already locked — use that information.
- Manage the clock in Blitz. In timed modes, fast average guesses beat perfect guesses. Don't spend 90 seconds on one brilliant idea when two quick probes give more data.
- In co-op, appoint a typist. Let one person enter while everyone shouts suggestions — it stops double entries and accidental submits.
- In turn-by-turn, play positionally. Alternate-guess formats reward thinking about which letters your opponent just eliminated. Their misses are free information.
- Practice sudden-death nerves. Sudden-death rounds are won by the calmer player. Keep a mental list of fallback starters so you never freeze.
Is There an Official Multiplayer Wordle?
No. As of 2026, the New York Times has not released any multiplayer or versus mode for Wordle. Every "Wordle multiplayer" game you find online is an independent fan project — most are open-source and free, which is why they tend to ask for nothing more than a display name.
That also means you should treat them like any free web game: play in your browser, never download an "installer" from a mirror site, and don't hand over personal details. The reputable projects run entirely in the browser with no sign-up .
