Betweenle is a Wordle-style puzzle game that replaces letter-by-letter tile feedback with alphabetical order. Instead of guessing which letters belong in the secret word, you narrow it down by asking whether the hidden 5-letter word falls before or after each of your guesses in dictionary order. You get 14 attempts to pin the answer between your guesses, with a distance meter showing how close you are.
What Is the Betweenle Game?
Created by Nebula Bytes, Betweenle keeps the daily-puzzle spirit of Wordle but rebuilds the core mechanic from scratch — one games directory describes it as a vocabulary game "in which you must identify the missing word between two supplied words in alphabetical order," offering both a daily mode and an unlimited mode. There are no green, yellow and grey tiles here. Every guess becomes a "fence post" in the dictionary: the game tells you whether the secret word comes before or after your guess alphabetically, and shows a percentage telling you how far away you are.
The percentage is based on the full dictionary. If your guess scores a "15", the hidden word sits roughly 15% of the way through the dictionary from your word. Your job is to shrink that percentage toward zero by boxing the answer in between two boundary words.
How to Play Betweenle: The Rules
The basic loop
- Type any valid 5-letter word as your first guess.
- Watch where it lands. The game moves your guess up or down relative to the hidden word based on alphabetical order. If your word is too "low" (the secret word comes after it in the dictionary), that gives you the bottom of the range.
- Read the distance meter. Orange dots and a percentage show the estimated distance between your guess and the mystery word. Smaller is better.
- Stay inside the range. Every subsequent guess must fall alphabetically between your previous upper and lower boundary words. The character panel above the keyboard grays out invalid characters so you always know your legal options.
- Solve within 14 turns. Crack the word and your score depends on speed: solving within the first 5 tries earns a perfect 5 out of 5. After that, your score drops gradually — every three additional turns costs a point — and failing the puzzle means game over for the day.
Daily, Practice and Levels modes
- Daily Mode — one puzzle per day, resetting at midnight local time. This is the mode most players share results from.
- Practice — unlimited puzzles with the same rules, so you can sharpen your strategy without the pressure of the daily streak.
- Levels — a 20-puzzle ladder, each with 14 turns, that ramps up in difficulty as you progress.
Why Betweenle Feels So Different From Wordle
Classic Wordle is a letter-hunting game: each guess reveals which letters are in the word and where they belong. Betweenle removes letter feedback entirely and turns the puzzle into a search problem. If you have ever played "hot and cold" or binary search with words, you already understand Betweenle's DNA.
A good Betweenle player thinks like a dictionary navigator. Openers that split the dictionary in half (words in the mid-range of the alphabet like LEMON or MIGHT) are far more valuable than clever letter-covering guesses, because the goal is not letters — it is position. Later guesses then zoom in: you want words that carve the remaining range into smaller and smaller slices.
Betweenle Strategy Tips That Actually Work
1. Start in the middle of the alphabet
Your first guess should land somewhere around the alphabetical midpoint so the "before or after" feedback eliminates the largest possible chunk of the dictionary. Words beginning with L, M or N are natural splitters.
2. Alternate sides deliberately
Once you know the word is after your first guess, your next guess should sit near the middle of the remaining range — not right next to your previous word. This is classic binary search: halve the search space every turn.
3. Watch the percentage, not just the arrows
The distance meter is more informative than the up/down indicator alone. If your new guess shows a much smaller percentage, your previous guess was already close — keep probing that neighborhood.
4. Respect the greyed-out characters
The character panel above the keyboard tracks which letters are still possible in each position based on the current range. Before typing a guess, glance at it: if a letter you need is greyed out in that slot, the game will reject the word.
5. Save one safe guess for the endgame
When the range is tiny (a percentage under 1), resist the urge to rush. List the plausible words left in the range first, then play the most probable one. A wrong guess at the boundary wastes a turn you might need. More pattern ideas live in our word puzzle strategies guide.

Where to Play Betweenle Free
Betweenle is a free browser game with no download or sign-up required. The most widely referenced places to play are the dedicated Betweenle pages on Wordle fan portals such as wordle-nyt.org and crosswordle.cc, which host the Daily, Practice and Levels modes in the browser. Because it is a web game, it runs on desktop, tablet and mobile without any app install.
Is Betweenle free to play?
Yes. Betweenle is completely free to play in the browser, including the Daily, Practice and Levels modes. No account or payment is required.
How many guesses do you get in Betweenle?
You get 14 attempts to find the secret word. Solving within the first 5 tries earns the maximum score of 5 out of 5.
What does the percentage mean in Betweenle?
The percentage is the estimated distance between your guess and the hidden word, expressed as a share of the full dictionary. A score of 15 means the secret word sits roughly 15% of the way through the dictionary from your word.
Why did my guess move up or down?
Betweenle moves your word up or down based on alphabetical order relative to the secret word. “Up” means the secret word comes after your guess in dictionary order; “down” means it comes before it.
Who made Betweenle?
Betweenle was created by Nebula Bytes, a developer of browser-based word and puzzle games.
Can I play Betweenle more than once a day?
Yes. Daily Mode is limited to one puzzle per day, but Practice mode gives you unlimited puzzles and the Levels mode offers a 20-puzzle ladder.
Is Betweenle harder than Wordle?
Most players find it trickier at first because letter-tile feedback is gone and you must think in alphabetical ranges instead. The 14-guess limit is more generous than Wordle’s 6, which balances the difficulty.
Do my guesses have to be between previous words?
Yes. After your first guess, every new word must fall alphabetically between your current upper and lower boundary words, and the game greys out characters that are no longer possible.
