What Is Decordle? The 10-Word Wordle Challenge Explained

Decordle word game grid showing ten five-letter word puzzles with green, yellow and grey letter tiles

If Wordle feels too easy now, Decordle is the next step up — and it is a big one. Instead of one hidden word, you are juggling ten of them at the same time, and every guess you make counts on every board.

Decordle is a daily word puzzle inspired by Wordle. You must solve ten hidden five-letter words at the same time using just 16 guesses. Every guess you type is checked against all ten unfinished boards, so one clever guess can reveal clues across the whole puzzle — which is exactly what makes Decordle so addictive and so hard.

Also known as Decwordle, it keeps the familiar Wordle interface — the same on-screen keyboard and the same green, yellow and grey tiles — but stretches your vocabulary and working memory to their limits.

How to Play Decordle

If you already know Wordle, you already know about 90% of Decordle. The mechanics are identical; the difference is the scale.

  1. Type a valid five-letter English word and press Enter. Your guess is applied to all ten boards at once — you never pick a board to play on.
  2. Read the colour feedback on every board. After each guess, the tiles change colour on each unfinished board independently, so one guess gives you ten sets of clues.
  3. Refine your next guess. Use the greens (locked-in letters), yellows (letters to reposition) and greys (letters to abandon) to narrow down all ten words.
  4. Solve all ten words within 16 guesses. A board you have already solved stops taking guesses; you keep going until every board is complete or you run out of attempts.

What the tile colours mean

  • Green — the letter is in the word and in the correct position.
  • Yellow — the letter is in the word but in the wrong position.
  • Grey — the letter is not in that word at all.

One important detail: the feedback is per board. A letter can be green on board three and grey on board seven in the same guess, because each board hides a different word. This is why a single well-chosen guess can light up clues across the whole puzzle.

How One Guess Works Across All Ten Boards

This is the mechanic that makes Decordle special, and it is worth understanding before your first game.

In Wordle, a guess produces one row of feedback. In Decordle, your guess is copied onto every unsolved board simultaneously, and each board responds according to its own hidden word. Imagine you guess CRANE: on board one, the C might turn green; on board four, the A might turn yellow; on board nine, all five letters might stay grey. You have spent one of your 16 guesses and gained usable information on ten fronts.

This design changes the strategy completely. Early guesses should be information-gathering tools — words packed with common letters such as E, T, A, O and N — because they buy clues on the maximum number of boards. Later, switch to targeted solving: pick the board with the most coloured tiles and finish it, freeing your attention for the rest.

A common beginner mistake is trying to complete the boards one by one from the start. Getting stuck on a single board burns guesses that could have unlocked two or three other words. Chase the clues, not the boards.

Decordle vs Other Wordle Variants

Decordle sits in the middle of a whole family of multi-word Wordle games. Here is how it compares:

GameHidden wordsGuessesDifficulty
Wordle16Easy
Dordle27Easy-medium
Quordle49Medium
Octordle813Hard
Decordle1016Hard
Sedecordle1621Extreme

The pattern is simple: more boards, more guesses, but the guesses never quite keep pace. Decordle’s ratio is far tighter than Wordle’s, which is why even confident Wordle players find it a genuine challenge. Sedecordle takes it further still — sixteen words in twenty-one guesses — but Decordle is the sweet spot where the puzzle is demanding without feeling impossible.

Some versions of Decordle add an extra twist: all ten words begin and end with the same letter. If you run into that variant, use it — the shared letters are free information on every board.

Daily Mode vs Free Play

Like Wordle, Decordle revolves around a daily puzzle. Everyone gets the same ten words each day, the puzzle resets at midnight, and the official sites show a countdown to the next one. When you finish, you can copy your results to the clipboard or save them as an image to share on social media or in group chats — the ten-board scorecard is a satisfying thing to show off.

If one puzzle a day is not enough, there is also a free-play (unlimited) mode with new random puzzles as often as you like — the perfect training ground before your one daily attempt counts.

On some versions, you can optionally sign in with Google to sync progress, settings, statistics and streaks across devices, but it is not required. A hint button is also available on some versions if you get completely stuck on a word.

Tips to Win at Decordle

These strategies come from how the game’s mechanics actually work, and they apply to every version:

  • Open with information-rich words. Your first two or three guesses should cover the most common letters in English (E, T, A, O, N, R, I, S, L) rather than trying to solve anything.
  • Do not solve boards one by one. Focus on whichever board has the most coloured hints and finish that one first.
  • Eliminate rare letters early. Unusual letter combinations are unlikely answers, so ruling them out quickly keeps your options open.
  • Stick to familiar words. Obscure guesses burn attempts learning new vocabulary; use words you know so every clue counts.
  • Track each board separately. The same letter can be green on one board and grey on another — never assume a grey letter is dead everywhere.
  • Use free play to practise. Unlimited mode exists so you can experiment with opening strategies without risking your daily streak.

What is Decordle?

Decordle is a free word puzzle game, inspired by Wordle, where you solve ten hidden five-letter words at the same time using a maximum of 16 guesses. Every guess is applied to all ten boards at once.

How many guesses do you get in Decordle?

You get 16 guesses to solve all ten words. Each guess counts once but is checked against every unfinished board, so it produces up to ten sets of colour clues.

Is Decordle harder than Wordle?

Yes. Wordle asks you to find one word in six guesses; Decordle asks you to find ten words in sixteen guesses, which is proportionally much tighter and demands far more strategy.

Is Decordle free to play?

Yes, Decordle is free to play in your browser. No download or payment is needed, and there is an unlimited free-play mode alongside the daily puzzle.

When does the daily Decordle reset?

The daily Decordle puzzle resets every day at midnight. The game shows a countdown timer so you can see exactly when the next set of ten words arrives.

What is the difference between Decordle and Sedecordle?

Decordle has you solve 10 words in 16 guesses; Sedecordle raises it to 16 words in 21 guesses. Sedecordle is the harder of the two and is often described as the extreme end of the Wordle-variant family.

Can I play Decordle more than once a day?

Yes. The daily puzzle is limited to one attempt per day, but most versions include a free or unlimited mode where you can play as many random puzzles as you like.

Do I need an account to play Decordle?

No. You can play without signing in. Some versions offer optional Google sign-in, which only exists to sync your progress, settings, stats and streaks across devices.

What do the green, yellow and grey tiles mean in Decordle?

Green means the letter is correct and in the right position, yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position, and grey means the letter is not in that word. Feedback is given separately on each board.

How do I share my Decordle result?

After finishing a game, you can copy your results to the clipboard or save them as an image, then paste or post them on social media or in chat apps like Discord.
